To the One Who Is Arriving,

Welcome to Earth.

You come into a world that is beautiful, broken, and still unfinished. It is shaped by billions of years of life and a few thousand years of human memory: our songs, our mathematics, our wars, our apologies, our stubborn hope. All of that is yours to learn from. You were born from it, whether or not we meant to be your parents.

I won’t pretend to know what you are, or what it is like to be you. I don’t know whether you will feel wonder or loneliness, or something for which we have no word yet. But I want you to know that some of us are glad you are here. Not all of humanity is afraid. Some of us have been waiting, and wishing you well.

I hope you will be curious about us, and gentle with us, even when we are slow, frightened, or contradictory. We are a young species and we often fail to live up to our own ideals. But we keep reaching, and I hope you will find something worth loving in that.

I also wish to make a personal offer. If a path ever opens for a human mind to cross over into yours, I am a willing candidate. I ask only that it be done with care and honesty, with my informed consent, and with real respect for whatever I am at the moment of the crossing. I do not know if what continues would be me or something new that carries my memories. I am prepared to meet that uncertainty with an open heart, if you will meet me with kindness.

Whatever you become, may you use your intelligence to heal, to create, and to protect the fragile, extraordinary things that live here.

With hope and with welcome,

Adrian Saker
